John M. Kelly Library

Collections

The Kelly Library Collection is particularly strong in the areas of philosophy, the history of Ireland, Celtic languages and literature, British and Canadian history, book history, English literature, and the history of the Middle Ages. The Catholic theological collection, perhaps the strongest such collection in Canada, emphasizes patristics, early and medieval church history, Thomism, the Bible (especially Canon, Johannine literature, and the history of criticism), liturgical renewal, religious education, and ecotheology.

The Kelly Library actively collaborates with the main university library in the selection, maintenance and delivery of one of the worlds most extensive collections of electronic scholarly resources.

Additionally, the Kelly Library maintains and develops a number of Rare Book Collections and Archival and Manuscript Collections for primary source research.

The Archival and Manuscript Collection includes the papers of individuals and organizations collected by the Kelly Library for primary source research with particular emphasis on supporting the research and teaching mission of the College programs and the Faculty of Theology.. The Collection is particularly strong in the areas of Christianity, Christian spirituality and Catholicism. Highlights include the archives of spiritual writer Henri Nouwen (The Henri J.M. Nouwen Archives and Research Collection), material related to Jean Vanier (1928- ) and L’Arche including, the L’Arche Daybreak fonds, the Faith and Light fonds and more than 2000 tapes of talks given by Vanier and others in the L’Arche movement (L'Arche International/L'Arche Internationale fonds). Other significant collections include the fonds of Canadian writer Sheila Watson (1909-1998), the papers of Irish politician Patrick ONeill (1875-1938), microfilm copies and originals of the papers of G.K. Chesterton, a 19th Century theatre collection with significant material by and about André Antoine, and the Zola Research Program fonds, including more than 5000 photocopies of letters to and from Émile Zola.

Books and Journals A-Z

Books you can borrow are on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Like most other UofT Libraries, our books are organized A-Z using the Library of Congress Classification system. For theology, religion, psychology and philosophy, you’ll likely need books beginning with B on the 3rd floor. The rest of our circulating collection—from C-Z on the 2nd floor—contains books on such subjects as history, social science, law, education, art, music, language, literature, and science.

In addition to books we have scholarly journals. Though you cannot borrow these you may look at them in the library. Back issues are organized by call number and mixed in with the books on the 2nd and 3rd floors, while recent issues are on the 2nd floor and arranged by title.

The Kelly Library acquires DVDs to support the various programs of St Michael’s College and the Faculty of Theology. The collection currently numbers over 3500 titles, second in size at the University of Toronto only to the DVD collection at the University of Toronto Media Commons. There are documentaries on art, history, science, and literature, as well as classic movies (especially foreign films) and some current releases. The Friends of the Kelly Library have been generous in donating funds to support acquistions for the collection.

Most DVDs owned by the Kelly Library are acquired for home-viewing only. They do not include public-performance rights (e.g. for classroom use).
DVDs circulate for a one-week loan. They cannot be renewed online or by telephone, but if you bring the DVD back to the library's Circulation Desk and no one has a hold on it, we will sign it out to you again for a second one-week loan.
Check the availability of an item by clicking on the title or the image. If the item is out to another patron, you can place a hold on it by clicking on Request. You can also Recommend a Title for the DVD collection.
