John M. Kelly Library St Michael's College Writing Centre
The St Michael’s College Writing Centre is a free service available to SMC undergraduates or undergraduates registered in an SMC course. A limited number of appointments are available for graduate students during the Summer term. The Centre is open all year, Summer term included, usually Monday to Friday. Some evenings and Sundays are available during busy times.
We provide individual 45 minute appointments. We offer help in all areas of academic writing: thesis development, argument, logic and rhetoric, organization and clarity, syntax and grammar, editing, style and documentation. We are a teaching service and our sessions are designed to teach students the skills necessary to write well.We also help with time management, notetaking skills, study techniques, and stress management. Our knowledge of the university community allows us to make appropriate referrals. All sessions and records are completely confidential.
We do not provide content or course material. We will not look at student work if the student is not present. If you need help with editing or proofreading, we will teach you the skills and show you examples from your work, but we will not simply fix your paper. We cannot predict what grade a paper is worth.
Students can use the Writing Centre at any stage of the writing process. Some students might want help interpreting the assignment instructions, others might want help with paragraphing, style or documentation. It is always useful for us to see the assignment sheet. To explore the various ways we can help you achieve academic success, please feel free to make an appointment.
