News Andrew Thompson: From Don to Dusk!
Former SMC don, Andrew Thompson, is enjoying success in the jazz world as the guitarist for the Matt Dusk band. A native of Saskatoon, SK, Andrew spent four years living in residence at St. Mike's (1998-2001) while studying jazz guitar at U of T's Faculty of Music. After graduating with honours in 2001, Andrew got some local gigs with bands around town including a residency at Alto Basso. In 2002 he began performing regularly with R & B singer / songwriter Jully Black. In 2004, Andrew landed an audition with Matt Dusk, the Toronto born jazz vocalist who had just released his debut gold album Two Shots. For the unacquainted, Matt Dusk is one of a pack of young crooners such as Michael Bubl and Jamie Callum, who are known for remaking the swinging jazz standards of yesteryear. Andrew was hired just in time for the band's first Canadian tour.
Although Matt Dusk has been a familiar name in Canadian jazz circles for a few years, his international profile got a boost when he was hired as an in house entertainer at the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas during the filming of Mark Burnett's hit reality TV show, The Casino. In fact, one of Andrew's very first gigs with Matt was for the Fox TV executives at the show's premiere in Las Vegas. Since then, Matt and his band have performed on the CBS Morning Show in New York, Canadian Idol, Canadian Jazz festivals across Canada, the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, and the famed Las Vegas Hilton (Elvis Presley's old theater) to name a few.
In 2005 while on a break from touring with Dusk, Andrew toured with Jully Black who opened for the Black Eyed Peas during their 13 city Canadian concert tour. Andrew also performed with Jully at the 2006 Juno Awards Gala in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
In addition to his work with Dusk and Black, Andrew also plays regular gigs with the Toronto R & B / Soul band De La Funk. You can catch them Friday evenings at the Windsor Arms Lounge just around the corner from St. Mike's. Andrew has also performed and collaborated with many other great artists in Toronto including Ray Robinson, Esthero, Phatt Al, Kardinal Offishall, God Made Me Funky, Treson, and Version Xcursion.
On June 13, Matt Dusk released his second album Back in Town, which debuted in the Top 20 on the album charts and features classics such as The Best is Yet to Come and On the Street Where you Live.
