St. Mike’s Principal Appointments

At its meeting yesterday, the Collegium appointed Professor McGowan to serve an additional three-year term, from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2011. He will be on administrative leave during the upcoming academic year.

Professor McGowan is Director of the Christianity and Culture program and is a member of the Department of History of the University of Toronto.

Richard Alway, President of the USMC, recommended the reappointment after receiving the report of a review committee struck in anticipation of the end of Professor McGowan's first term as Principal.

"I am delighted that the Collegium has reappointed Professor McGowan, and that he has agreed to continue serving St Michael's in this very important role," said Dr. Alway.

"Professor McGowan has fostered the continued growth of St Michael's unique undergraduate programs. He has led important new initiatives, helping found our Book and Media Studies program and spearheading St Michael's partnership in the U of T's Concurrent Teacher Education program."

Professor Roberge appointed Acting Principal of St. Michael's

TORONTO, March 30, 2007 – At its meeting Wednesday, the Collegium of the University of St Michael’s ratified the appointment of Professor Yves Roberge to serve as Acting Principal for the upcoming academic year.

Professor Roberge will oversee St Michael's undergraduate Arts and Science operations from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008. Professor Mark McGowan, who has been reappointed to a second term as Principal, will be on administrative leave during that time.

Professor Roberge is a Fellow of St Michael's and a member of the Department of French of the University of Toronto. He was appointed Acting Principal by Dr. Richard Alway, President of the USMC.

"Professor Roberge is an outstanding scholar and teacher, who has held numerous administrative positions in the Faculty of Arts and Science and in the Department of French," said Dr. Alway.

"I am grateful to Professor Roberge for taking on this responsibility in service to St Michael's. Our undergraduate programs will be in excellent hands during Professor McGowan's leave."

Professor Roberge is the editor of several books and volumes and the author of dozens of scholarly articles and other publications, and is currently President of the Canadian Linguistic Association. He is a nine-time recipient of the Dean's Excellence Award in the Faculty of Arts and Science, and received the Faculty's Outstanding Teaching Award for 1995-1996.

Professor Roberge has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals, and on many other boards and committees, including the College of Reviewers of the Canada Research Chairs, and a research grant selection committee of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. He is also the recipient of numerous academic research grants and awards.
