TORONTO, August 27, 2009 - The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television is pleased to announce the nominations for the 24th Annual Gemini Awards, recognizing the year's best in Canadian English-language television.

The docudrama series Death or Canada, produced by Ballinran Productions earned a total of 4 nominations. Narrated by Brian Dennehy it tells the story of the Irish Famine of 1847 and its impact on Canada. Death or Canada is nominated as Best History Documentary Program, Best Photography in a Documentary Program or Series, Best Sound in a Documentary Program or Series and Best Original Music Score in a Documentary Program or series. The film was based in part on the research of SMC Principal Mark McGowan and it featured on-camera appearances by Professor McGowan, Honorary SMC Fellow Robert Kearns, and several SMC students who worked as extras. Segments of the documentary were filmed on the St Michael's campus.

Death or Canada was nominated earlier this year for an Irish Film and Television Award. The docudrama, produced for History Television, aired in Canada in March and has also aired in Ireland, UK and Europe.
