Applying to Residence
1. Enable your UTORid
You must enable your UTORid (included in your acknowledgment letter) in order to logon to the University’s common residence application, MyRes.
2. Confirm your interest in residence on MyRes.
Confirm your interest on MyRes. This must be completed by March 31 in order to qualify for the Residence Guarantee.
3. Rank your residence choices on MyRes.
Once you have been admitted to U of T, you must log into MyRes to rank your residence choices. This step must be completed within two weeks of receiving your offer to U of T in order to maintain the Residence Guarantee.
4. Complete the StarPortal Application
If you have a residence guarantee or you are a returning resident:
You will be emailed with a password to login to the StarPortal application for St. Mikes once you complete the MyRes rankings. Check the email you have registered with ROSI for this email.
If you do not have a guarantee and are applying to SMC as a new student:
Please visit https://starportal.utoronto.ca to fill out an application once you have completed MyRes.
Press “obtain/forgot password” and a password will be emailed to you.
You are only added to the SMC waitlist once you have filled out the StarPortal Application. If you have an offer, be sure to respond and pay your $600 deposit by credit card on StarPortal by the dates indicated in your offer email, or we will give your spot to the next person on our waitlist.
Residents must be full time U of T students.
Returning residences are expected to have a GPA of 2.2 or higher.
While SMC primarily houses undergraduate students, we do have approximately 12 spaces in quiet wings for male graduate students. Please apply as a new resident.
Our applicants are admitted in three separate groups and in this order:
- Freshmen Students with a Residence Guarantee
- Returning Residents
- New Students
The number of rooms remaining after the first two groups have been admitted determines the number of rooms available for the third group. For the past few years, we have had very few spaces for students in the 3rd group.
Because the total number of applications invariably exceeds the total number of spaces available, many of those who apply may never be contacted. Applications will be kept on file in priority sequence in case vacancies arise later in the summer - or even during the academic year. Those on our waitlist may be contacted via email to “renew” their waitlist status at some point in the summer.
How it Works
SMC residents pay for their room and mealplan combined. All residents must sign up for the entire academic session (September-April).
See Fee Schedule for the specific fee breakdown
Please note early withdrawal comes with serious financial implications. We recommend that students are positive that they want to live in residence before accepting their offer to avoid major financial loss. See more under our “withdrawals” section.
- All residents pay $22 for the St Michael's College Residence Council (SMRC), which organizes various sporting and social events within the residence.
Non-SMC students (i.e. professional faculties, non-SMC graduate students, students from other colleges, etc.) pay the following, in addition to the SMRC fee:
- SMCSU: St Michael’s Student's Union fee: $28.00
- The Mike: Student newspaper fee: $5.20
- College Fee: A fee for improvements to the College facilities: $97.50
SMC students already pay these fees with their tuition.
How to Pay
Residence fees are paid the same way tuition fees are paid. Please see this helpful link for an explanation on how to pay ALL fees.
The Fee Deferral Program is intended to assist those who are relying on financial assistance to help pay their residence fees, but who will not receive that assistance until after they move into residence.
For more information, please download a copy of our Residence Fee Deferral Application package.
The deadline for applying for a fee deferral is August 9th, 2014. Please note that incomplete forms or applications that do not include the necessary documents will be rejected.
Withdrawal Policy (2014-2015)
Students who withdraw by August 15th will forfeit $300 of their $600 deposit.
Students who withdraw from August 16th until September 1st will forfeit their entire $600 deposit, plus an additional $400 withdrawal penalty.
Residents who withdraw after September 1st (for any reason, including eviction) will be charged room & board from September 1st to the day of withdrawal, all incidental fees, and a withdrawal penalty calculated as follows:
