Applying to Residence: 2015-16 Academic Year

Instructions for undergraduate students:

1. Enable your JOIN/UTORid (first year students w/ residence guarantee only)

You must enable your JOIN/UTORid found in your acknowledgment letter

2. Confirm your interest in residence on MyRes (first year students w/ residence guarantee only)

Confirm your interest on MyRes using your JOIN/UTORid by March 31, 2015 at 11:59pm EST in order to qualify for the Residence Guarantee.

3. Rank your residence choices on MyRes (first year students w/ residence guarantee only)

Once you receive an offer of admission from U of T, you must log into MyRes to rank your residence choices within two (2) weeks of receiving your offer in order to maintain the Residence Guarantee.

4. Complete the StarPortal Application

If you have a residence guarantee or you are a returning resident:
You will be emailed with a password to login to the StarPortal application for St. Mikes once you complete the MyRes rankings.

Check the email you have registered with ROSI for this email.

If you do not have a guarantee and are applying as a new student:
Please visit https://starportal.utoronto.ca to fill out an application once you have completed MyRes.

Press “obtain/forgot password” and a password will be emailed to you. You are only added to the SMC waitlist once you have filled out the StarPortal Application.

5. Accept your Residence Offer

If you receive a Residence Offer, be sure to respond and pay your $600 by credit card on StarPortal by the date indicated in your offer email, or you will automatically forfeit your spot.

Please note that the SMC Residence Office will only communicate with students using their official @mail.utoronto.ca email addresses.

Residence Guarantee

Residence is guaranteed for all new full-time students entering their first year of university in an undergraduate program for the first time, provided that they have indicated their interest in residence by completing the University's common residence application (MyRes) by March 31, 2015 at 11:59pm EST, and have received and accepted an offer of admission by June 1, 2015.

Students must respond to all deadlines and meet all deadlines and meet all deposit requirements in order to maintain their eligibility.

Requirements

  • Residents must be full time U of T undergraduate students
  • Returning residents are expected to have a CGPA of 2.2 or higher
  • Graduate student applicants are automatically added to the waitlist and will only be considered once all undergraduate applications have been assessed - please apply as a new resident

Admission Priorities

Applicants are admitted in three separate groups in this order:

  1. First year students with a Residence Guarantee
  2. Returning residents (those currently living at SMC Residence)
  3. New students(those who have not lived at SMC Residence)

The number of rooms remaining after the first two groups have been admitted determines the number of rooms available for the third group. Because the number of applications invariably exceeds the total number of spaces available, many of those who apply may never be contacted. Applications are kept on file on the waitlist in case vacancies arise later in the summer or during the academic year.

If you'd like to apply to our Fall/Winter or Winter Term waitlists, follow these steps.

How it Works

Residents pay for their room and mealplan combined. All residents must sign up for the entire academic session (September-April).

See Fee Schedule below for the specific fee breakdown

Residence Council Fees

All residents pay the following incidental fee:

  • St. Michael's Residence Council (SMRC) fee: $22.00

Non-SMC Student Incidental Fees

Students who live in SMC Residence but are not registered SMC students (i.e. professional faculties, non-SMC graduate students, students from other colleges, etc.) pay the following fees in addition to the SMRC fee:

  • St. Michael's College Student Union (SMCSU): $28.00
  • The Mike student newspaper: $5.20
  • St. Michael's College Fee: $97.50

SMC students are automatically charged these incidental fees with their tuition.

Payment Options & Charges

The $600 reservation deposit must be paid through the online application and cannot be paid through ROSI.

The first and second installments of your residence fees will be loaded onto your ROSI account prior to each term and can be paid online (see www.fees.utoronto.ca for instructions). Students are responsible for monitoring their own ROSI account balance.

A service charge of 1.5% compounded monthly (19.56% per annum) will be levied by U of T on the 15th of every month to the unpaid balance of the first installment commencing October 15th, 2015 and to the unpaid balance of the second installment commencing February 15th, 2016 until the entire residence account is paid in full.

Fee Deferrals

The Fee Deferral Program is intended to assist those who are relying on financial assistance to help pay their residence fees, but who will not receive that assistance until after they move into residence.

The 2015-16 Fee Deferral Program package will be posted here in July.
