Welcome Event for New Students and their Supporters
If you are within commuting distance of campus, we encourage you to attend. If you haven't already done so, please sign up [Note: The Welcome event has passed and resgistration is closed ]
Campus parking is unavailable so we suggest that you take the Toronto Transit (TTC). It is the better way.
You can get off at the Bay Station on the Bloor-Danforth line, go out the Bay Street exit, turn right on Bay Street and walk south to the lights at Bloor. Cross Bloor and keep walking south until you reach St. Mary Street. Turn right on St. Mary Street and within a couple of minutes you will see Loretto College Residence on your right and the grounds of St. Michael's College on your left. It is an 8-10 minute walk from the subway exit.
You can also get off at the Museum Station on the University line and exit on the east side of Queen's Park. Walk south along Queen's Park East until you come to the green space which separates the grounds of St. Michael's College and Victoria College. Turn left just after you pass the E. J. Pratt Library and walk along the short path which will take you into the quadrangle at the centre of the St. Michael's campus. It is a 6-8 minute walk from the subway exit.
The events of the day will take place in a number of buildings which are very close together. The buildings are all noted on the Campus Map.
Elmsley Hall at 81 St. Mary Street
Loretto College at 70 St. Mary Street
John M. Kelly Library at 113 St. Joseph Street
Brennan Hall does not have an address but if you look on the map you will see that the address is listed as 81 St. Mary Street. You will also see that Elmsley Hall is also at 81 St. Mary Street. Sounds a bit odd, doesn't it? The fact is that Elmsley Hall is at 81 St. Mary Street and Brennan Hall is not. Brennan Hall is in the middle of the St Michael's College grounds and not on any street. It is confusing but, like many other things at the university, you'll figure it out after a bit.
Within Brennan Hall, activities will take place in three spaces - Odette Lounge and the Coop are both on the main floor and Sam Sorbara Auditorium is on the second floor.
If you have trouble with stairs, please enter Brennan Hall from the north end (from the St. Mary Street side). There are ramps, no steps and the doors can be opened by pressing a button. Inside the north entrance there is a small wheel chair accessible elevator which will take you almost to the entrance of Sam Sorbara Auditorium.
If you or a guest require assistance with access to buildings, please e-mail Grace Chiodo to discuss how we can assist.
There will be two types of activities - sit down and walk around.
The big sit down activities will take place in Sam Sorbara Auditorium. The morning and afternoon sessions are identical and will feature greetings from Principal Domenico Pietropaolo, a light hearted but blunt assessment of first year transition by Professor Scott Browning of Chemistry. There will also be greeting from Alex Zappone. President of the St. Michael’s College Students’ Union and a bit of exhortation from the Registrar, Damon Chevrier who will handle the Q and As.
Richard Carter, one of the St. Michael's personal librarians will offer four sessions in Kelly Library on the innovative services which the library offers and how to access information effectively in the enormous UofT library system.
There will be three types of tours going on throughout the day so if you would like to attend the sit down sessions and take some of the tours you should plan to be here the full day.
Please bear in mind that St. George campus tours are available on a regular basis throughout the summer through the U of T Visitors Centre.
Throughout the day there will be staff available in the Coop to answer questions about different aspects of university life.
- Staff from the St. Michael's College Registrar’s Office
- Staff from both residences – St. Michael’s College and Loretto College
- Jenna Sunkenberg, Co-ordinator, St. Michael's Cornerstone course
- Marilyn Elphick, Director of Campus Ministry stmikes.utoronto.ca/campusministry
- Marc Arnold, Co-ordinator, Transition and Advising, Centre for International Experience
- Vivian Chung, U of T First in the Family at University program
- Shoaib Alli and Carrie Proctor, U of T division of Student Life
In Odette Lounge, there will be representatives of the St. Michael's College Student Union (SMCSU), students from the Mentors and Academic Peers program and the student committee which is organizing Frosh week in September.
Brennan's Best Café will be open all day in Odette Lounge and the Canada Room (the residence dining hall) will be open for lunch.
The TCard office will be open Saturday, June 15 from 10am to 2pm. The TCard office is located in Robarts Library, 2nd Floor, at 130 St. George St. (spanning Huron to Sussex). If you enter by the north exterior stairs you will be in the second floor lobby and the TCard office is just past the computer display cases.
In order for a student to obtain their TCard they must present their U of T student (or applicant) number found on the Offer of Admission, along with one piece of government issued photo I.D.
You are free to pick and choose your activities as you see fit.
What should you bring?
Bring a bag to carry any flyers you pick up, a note pad and a pen, your curiosity and your questions.
Hope for good weather.
We look forward to seeing many of you on June 15.
P.S. We will continue to send Bulletins over the course of the summer so that all new students - not just those who live close to Toronto - have access to the same information.
