EAITE: News & Events

Monthly Eco-Sabbath Gatherings

At 10 a.m. on the first Sunday of every month (September to May, inclusive), the faculty and student members of the EAITE facilitate a reflection and discussion prompted by the readings for that Sunday’s liturgy. The gathering is hosted at the Passionist Centre for Ecology and Spirituality at St. Gabriel’s Parish, 650 Sheppard Ave. East , Toronto (a block and a half east of Bayview Ave. on the north side of Sheppard Ave. East , or a block east of the Bayview Subway station on the Sheppard Line). The guided reflection brings an ecological perspective to the readings, using the cosmological vision of Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme. All are welcome. Coffee and tea provided. No fee.

Advent Winter Solstice Reflection

Each year, the director of the EAITE and the director of the Passionist Centre for Ecology and Spirituality facilitate an evening of reflection drawing from the liturgical (Advent) and cosmological (Solstice) seasons. The Advent Winter Solstice Reflection will be held at the Centre for Ecology and Spirituality at St. Gabriel’s Parish in Toronto on the evening of the winter solstice. Please contact the Director of the Institute for further information about this year’s gathering.

Triduum Retreat

Each year, the director of the EAITE and the director of the Passionist Centre for Ecology and Spirituality facilitate a Triduum retreat that brings an eco-theological focus to our understanding and experience of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter vigil. Participants meet at the Passionist Centre for Ecology and Spirituality at St. Gabriel’s Parish on: Holy Thursday evening from 7:30 until 10:00 p.m. ; Good Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a light lunch included; Easter Vigil evening from 7:30 until 10:00 p.m. with a celebration to follow. Please contact the Director of the Institute for further information about this year’s gathering.

Brothers of Earth

Each year, men from various callings, traditions and bioregions gather during the summer to share information and support as they individually and collectively work toward a greater understanding and experience of a spirituality of Earth. Known as the Brothers of Earth, they have been meeting at various sites in Canada and the United States where they can explore different aspects of eco-spirituality. In 2004, Brothers of Earth gathered in Toronto from the evening of June 17 to midday on June 20, 2004 , and the EAITE hosted several events. In 2006, the Brothers will be meeting from the evening of Thursday, June 8 to the afternoon of Sunday, June 11, 2006 at Loyola House, Guelph , Ontario . For more information, contact Dr. Jim Conlon at jacstory@aol.com or the director of the EAITE.

Tour of an Ecology House

Each year on the Saturday closest to Earth Day, Anthony and Mary Ketchum invite members of the EAITE community to tour their home in Caledon which is completely “off the grid.” Learn how solar and wind power, cisterns, geo-thermal energy, composting toilets, and good design can result in a home that leaves a very small ecological footprint on the planet.
