Winter Break Closure at SMC Residence

The University of Toronto and St. Michael’s College, including the SMC Residence, will be closed for the holidays from December 21, 2022 at 12:00pm until January 9, 2023. The SMC Residence will officially reopen on Sunday, January 8 at 10:00am.

While the Dean’s Office is not responsible for arranging alternate accommodations for students during the Winter Break, however, we have found options that students can explore if they choose to:

1.  The Chelsea Hotel
The Chelsea has offered a discounted rate for U of T students over the Winter Break. To qualify for the UofT rate, you must:

Book a minimum stay of 5 nights and be at least 18 years of age (ID and TCard are required at check-in) To book a room, email cstor.specialtyres@chelseatoronto.com, with the following information:

  • Full name
  • If you are booking with a friend, only one person should email, and include both occupants’ names.
  • Phone number
  • College Affiliation (i.e. SMC and/or Loretto)
  • Dates you are interested in booking

A sales associate will contact you to confirm your reservation and take a deposit via credit card (Note: a $150 hold will be placed on the card for incidentals).

2. Chestnut Residence Room Share Program For the first time, Chestnut Residence, located at 89 Chestnut Street, will be organizing a Room Share program as a more cost-friendly option for residence students. From December 21, 2022 at 3:00pm, and ending on the morning of January 6, 2023, you may be able to stay in a current Chestnut resident’s room while they are away for the break. The cost to stay as a guest in the Winter Break Room Share program is $500.

Students interested in participating are invited to email chestnut.residence@utoronto.ca and bailee.walls@utoronto.ca with any questions, and to submit your request. The deadline to apply is December 4, 2022 at 11:59pm.

Please note, availability is limited to the number of students who volunteer their rooms. There will be limited services available, as both the Dining Hall and Front Desk will be closed for the duration of the holidays. Security will be available 24/7.

Roommate and Financial Aid

Some students may want to consider sharing a hotel room as a way to reduce costs and/or to have company over the holidays.  This form, “Winter Break – Voluntary Roommate Search“, was created to assist those who would like to room with another SMC student for the Winter Break.  Please know that your responses to the form will be viewable by the other SMC residents who are looking for roommates.

Financial Aid
Students who require financial aid to assist with the cost of the Winter Break stay can apply for financial aid via the University of Toronto Grant Application Portal
