The Gaelic Soul: an Evening with Donald S. Murray
April 16 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm EDT
Donald S. Murray is an award-winning Scottish writer whose historical novels, poetry, and non-fiction work addresses the depth of Hebridean culture and the Gaelic soul. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Association for Scottish Literature and in the autumn 2026 will be the Scottish Writing Fellow at the Centre for Irish and Scottish Studies at the University of Otago, New Zealand.
His novel, As the Women Lay Dreaming explores the ravages of war in the small community of the Isle of Lewis. The tragedy of the subsequent depopulation of Lewis by a government-sponsored immigration to Canada is featured in his novel, The Salt and the Flame, and poetry, Leaving Songs. He wrote and performs in The Metagama: An Atlantic Odyssey, a stage production which has toured Scotland since 2023, the 100th anniversary the Metagama. This voyage now symbolized the mass emigrations from the Hebrides in the 1920s.
