SUMMARY:Magnifica Humanitas: Choosing Humanity in the AI Revolution
DESCRIPTION:— A Symposium on Putting Pope Leo’s “AI Encyclical” into Practice \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 30-31\, 2026 (Fri/Sat)\, 10:30am – 5:00pm \n\n\n\nFather Madden Hall (in Carr Hall\, 100 St. Joseph St) \n\n\n\nFree admission / Lunch included: Register now \n\n\n\nHow do we maintain our humanity and agency in a world that increasingly revolves around AI? \n\n\n\nFrom workplaces to social media feeds\, from breakthroughs in healthcare research to that question you Googled last night\, AI seems to be permeating every aspect of our lives. But as the ways we think\, work\, live\, and act are being rapidly transformed\, how do we protect and nurture those parts of our humanity that matter most—our dignity\, our agency\, our creativity and moral commitments? \n\n\n\nJoin us as we discern our stakes in the current AI revolution through the lens of Magnifica Humanitas\, Pope Leo’s “AI encyclical.” Through two days of panels\, discussions\, and workshops\, we will explore how the Pope uses Catholic social teaching to engage with the structural realities of AI\, and consider our own practical responses to his call to prioritise human dignity over unrestricted AI development. \n\n\n\nBy asking practical questions about AI in light of Magnifica Humanitas\, this symposium will help us engage critically and faithfully with changing technologies in our own lives\, work\, and service to the world. Whether you are new to the conversation and wanting to learn more or are already confronting pressing issues around AI\, we welcome you to join us in this timely dialogue on navigating the emerging AI frontier. \n\n\n\n__________ \n\n\n\nMagnifica Humanitas Online Reading Group \n\n\n\nMonday evenings (7-8pm) from Sep. 14-Oct. 19 \n\n\n\nUPDATE: sign-ups for the reading group have now closed. \n\n\n\nAre you interested in Pope Leo’s “AI encyclical\,” but daunted by the thought of reading it alone? Have you been tempted to ask ChatGPT for a summary? Join us instead for this virtual reading group and explore the encyclical in conversation with others. Over 6 weekly sessions\, Dr. Ren Ito will facilitate discussions of each chapter of Magnifica Humanitas. Participants will build an understanding of the encyclical’s key arguments\, and will learn to engage with current issues of new technology through the lens of Catholic social teaching. \n\n\n\nParticipants will also have the opportunity to present reflections on and takeaways from the encyclical during a session of our October 30-31 Magnifica Humanitas symposium.

SUMMARY:Hope in Action: Building Hope: Reimagining Institutions for Human Flourishing (Continuing Education Free Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:In a time of precarity\, fragmentation\, burnout\, and democratic uncertainty\, what would be possible if we stepped outside of the constrictions of scarcity and austerity and oriented toward abundance to reimagine how our public-serving higher education institutions can be places where hope can become a force for collective renewal? \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, Dr. Jessica Riddell (professor of Early Modern Literature at Bishop’s University and founder of the Hope Circuits Institute) will join Dr. David Sylvester (President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of St. Michael’s College) to discuss the transformative role that hope plays in building vibrant institutions. \n\n\n\nDrawing on her work with the Hope Circuits Institute and her forthcoming book\, Hope Circuits Illuminated: Conversations with Luminaries Amid Collapse\, Dr. Riddell will share practical tools\, reflections and insights from engaging in thousands of hours of conversations with scholars\, students\, presidents\, staff\, artists\, and public thinkers to explore how public educational institutions can reclaim their civic purpose and embrace the complexity of our world to imagine new futures. \n\n\n\nPart of the Hope in Action speaker series from USMC CE\n\n\n\nJoin Continuing Education at the University of St. Michael’s College for a free speaker series exploring how hope becomes action in sustainability\, leadership\, social impact\, spirituality\, education\, technology\, and the arts. \n\n\n\nHope is not wishful thinking. It is the decision to engage with our world’s most urgent challenges and work toward meaningful change \, from climate and culture to how we live our values in our workplaces and communities. \n\n\n\nHope in Action brings together innovators\, faculty\, alumni\, and leaders who are meeting urgent challenges with clarity\, courage\, and purpose. \n\n\n\nCome to be inspired. Leave ready to act.
