Extramural Readers may now submit Kelly Curbside Pickup requests to kelly.library@utoronto.ca. Extramural requests should include the item’s title and call number along with their library barcode.

Kelly Curbside Pickup runs Monday to Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Patrons with a valid UTORid will be able to submit a request through the UTL catalogue for any physical items in our collection not held in the Hathitrust Digital Library. When the materials are ready for collection, patrons will receive a pickup notice by email. This message will explain our contactless pickup procedures and social distancing protocols.

NOTE: Library staff cannot accommodate in-person requests for this service. Please make sure you make your request using the UTL catalogue.




Making a Request



  • Find your item(s) in the library catalogue.

  • In the catalogue record, click the Get Help button and follow the prompts.

  • If an electronic copy of the book is available via the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS), you will be provided with a link to the ETAS. (Please note you will then need to log in to HathiTrust to access the full text.)

  • If not, continue by clicking “Request Curbside Pickup” and click “Continue.”

  • Have your barcode and pin ready and enter the information and click “Continue.”

  • Making a request: Under “Call Number,” please select St. Michael’s College (John M. Kelly) to pick-up the item at the Kelly Library. Please remember to enter your email address so that we can reach you when your request(s) are ready for pickup. If another person will be picking up your items, please ensure you add a note saying so in the notes field before you click “Submit request.”

  • If you are requesting one or more volumes in a book series, please specify which volumes you would like in the notes field before you click “Submit request.”

  • You will receive an automated message to let you know when your request has been received. Staff will check the shelf for your requested book(s) and send a message about any requested book(s) that are not available.

  • Wait for a final e-mail providing instructions for where and when to pick up your item(s).

Contactless Pickup Procedures

Step 1: Ensure that you have your T-card, photo ID, and a copy of the pick-up confirmation email before arriving at the Kelly Library. If you are collecting material for another person, please have their T-card, your photo ID, and a copy of this email.


Step 2: Arrive at the Kelly library and go to the waiting area. When you see the drop box area is clear, approach the designated area BOX 1. If you do not see a staff member, call 416-926-7114.


Step 3: Show your TCard to the staff member at the window. They will signal you to move to the area labelled BOX 2 to wait for your bagged materials.


Step 4: The staff member will bring your material to pickup table. Please wait for the staff member to re-enter the building before retrieving your bag(s).

Health & Safety

  • When you arrive at the library, please remember to maintain 2m/6ft from other patrons.

  • Please keep in mind that no one will be able to enter the building for water or washroom breaks.

  • Please place returns through the book slot. If there is a patron being served, please be courteous and maintain a safe distance.

  • While the pick-up will be outside, we encourage patrons to wear a mask.

Kelly Curbside Pickup FAQs

Sorry–but no. Patrons and non-library staff will not be allowed to enter the building. Washrooms and water fountains are not available to them when they pick up materials.

Lead times will vary depending on volume and staff availability. Patrons will receive a notice when items are ready with instructions along with our opening days and hours.

We cannot arrange for pickups on statutory holidays or weekends.

Currently, we are only offering curbside pickups for circulating items–mostly books and DVDs–from the John M. Kelly Library.

It depends. The limits on books through Kelly Curbside Pickup are the same that you have on your regular library account. For example, if you are an undergraduate, you may borrow a maximum of 50 items.

Please return Kelly Library items through the Kelly Library book slot to ensure materials are available to the next patron in a timely manner.

Currently, due dates for items will be April 30th, 2021. However, this is being updated during closures. Please continue to visit the Kelly Library website for updates on renewal extensions.

Submit a scan request to kelly.infoexpress@utoronto.ca and a PDF will be emailed to you. We can only provide a scan of one chapter/article/essay per source due to copyright limitations. If you need more than this, please submit a pickup request.

Materials uncollected after 10 working days will be discharged. Other people may be needing them!

If someone else is picking up item(s) for you, they must have your T-Card, their photo ID, and a copy of an email from you authorizing them to collect material on your behalf. Please remember to note in your online request that another person will be picking up your items. You can do this in the notes field when making your request through the catalogue.

Once you’ve found a book to request in the UTL catalogue, click on “Get Help” to place a curbside pickup request (if available). You’ll then be prompted for your library barcode, which appears on your TCard. If you were issued your UTORid online and do not have a barcode, just email Library Help at libraryhelp@utoronto.ca with your student number to request your barcode. You can then place your request, and when the book is ready for pickup, you can show government-issued photo ID instead of a TCard.
