St. Michael’s College Writing Centre St. Michael’s College Writing Centre The Writing Centre offers 30-minute one-on-one appointments with a writing instructor at the Kelly Library. Instructors help all registered St. Michael’s College students, including students in the Faculty of Theology. Any individual enrolled in an SMC course may also receive help with their SMC writing assignments. Our goal is to help you develop your own skills in writing, revising, and editing your own work. You can work with a writing instructor on any kind of written assignment such as essays, book reviews, critiques, essay exam preparations, presentations, and reports (yes, including science reports) at any stage of development, from conceptualization to final draft. You can also discuss your graduate school and scholarship applications. During the appointment, students can receive instruction in and an objective critique of their written assignments for coursework in any discipline. We can discuss focus, thesis statements, argumentation, clarity in style and overall organization, citing sources, and grammar. While our writing instructors will advise on organization and style, they will not proofread your essays, correct grammar, or provide feedback on the accuracy of your interpretation of the material in your assignment. All Writing Centre appointments will be delivered online for the Fall 2020 semester. Drop-in Writing Help Were you unable to get an appointment? Do you just want a quick opinion? Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Drop-In Writing Help will be launched at a later date. Please check back for information as our services are updated. Preparing For Your Appointment You don’t need to have a final draft of your assignment ready for review. Feel free to schedule an appointment regardless of where you are in the writing process! Bring in your assignment sheet and other relevant course material for in-person visits or submit it online in advance of your appointment if you are meeting virtually. For in-person visits, please bring a printed hardcopy of your work. Printers are available for use at the Kelly Library should you need to print your work before your visit. You are welcome to come back regularly to work on a sequence of skills and a variety of assignments. Cancellation Policy If you need to cancel your appointment, please do so as soon as possible, but at least 24 hours in advance of your scheduled time. This will allow other students to get an appointment with an instructor. Repeatedly failing to show up for a scheduled appointment will result in you being blocked from booking future sessions.
