SUMMARY:Longing for Home: The Prophetic Witness of Henri Nouwen in a Wounded World
DESCRIPTION:The Henri Nouwen Society is partnering with St. Michael’s to host its International Conference this spring. Longing for Home is for all who carry a longing for healing\, connection\, and hope in a hurting world. Whether you are a pastor\, spiritual director\, therapist\, caregiver\, educator\, parent\, artist\, concerned citizen\, or spiritual seeker\, you are invited to join a community of fellow travelers inspired by the prophetic witness of the Dutch Catholic priest Henri Nouwen. Together\, we will explore what it means to create “home” — places of belonging\, compassion\, and courage — in our lives\, ministries\, and communities. If you are drawn to Nouwen’s vision of vulnerability\, hospitality\, and the transformative power of love\, this conference will offer space for reflection\, renewal\, and deep conversation with others who share your longing to be a healing presence in the world. \n\n\n\nExplore our inspiring lineup of speakers and topics—visit the conference website to learn more!

SUMMARY:Intoxicated Exiles?: Irish Drinking in Memoir\, Fiction and Ballads since the 1950s
DESCRIPTION:Alice Mauger\, Assistant Professor of Modern Irish Social History at University College Dublin\, Ireland \n\n\n\nCharbonnel Lounge\, 81 St Mary Street\, Toronto ON M5S 1J4 \n\n\n\nOh the craic was good in Cricklewood and they wouldn’t leave the CrownWith glasses flying and Biddies crying sure Paddy was going to townOh mother dear I’m over here and I’m never coming backWhat keeps me here: the rake of beer\, the ladies and the craic– “McAlpine’s Fusiliers” \n\n\n\nThis talk explores cultural portrayals of Irish drinking since the 1950s. It focuses on literary works by the first and second-generation Irish\, alongside the lyrics of popular Irish ballads\, and it sheds light on the experiences of an ethnic community whose drinking practices have elicited intense scrutiny. What emerges is the variety of roles both drinking and drinking spaces played for those seeking work\, lodging\, culture and camaraderie\, all while grappling with a sustained self-consciousness about the hard-drinking Irish label. \n\n\n\nAlice Mauger is an Assistant Professor of Modern Irish Social History at University College Dublin\, Ireland. She teaches and researches the history of alcohol\, drugs and psychiatry from the 1800s to present day and is currently leading a major research project DIASPORA: Deciphering Irish Alcohol and Substance Use – Postwar Representations and Accounts.  \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP.

SUMMARY:Hope in Action: Better Conversations to Thrive in Difficult Times
DESCRIPTION:Examining Language and Communication Techniques for a More Hopeful Future \n\n\n\nIn the middle of an omnicrisis\, how does one stay hopeful enough to take effective action? Having any hope can seem naive in times like these\, amid wars\, worsening climate disaster\, populist autocracies on the rise\, technology that destabilizes jobs and lives\, and on and on. \n\n\n\nBut hope is always available\, if you know how to find it. In conversation with strategist and writer Malcolm Gilderdale\, communication scientist\, educator\, and author Dr. Haesun Moon will explain how better conversations can make us more hopeful and more effective\, and practical methods for our own lives. Dr. Moon believes a deeper understanding of language and cognition can help us reshape our understanding of what’s possible in our own lives\, in our personal relationships\, and in our communities more broadly. \n\n\n\nThrough pragmatic\, practical explanations (and her trademark sense of humour)\, Dr. Moon will help us shift our orientation toward hopefulness and find a way forward to what she calls “the preferred future.”
