The Schola\, directed by Dr. Christina Labriola\, will perform the dramatic\, colourful\, and virtuosic Missa Omnium Sanctorum by the Catholic Czech Baroque composer Jan Dismas Zelenka\, together with guest soloists and instrumentalists led by Chris Verrette.  \n\n\n\nAdmission is free\, with donations accepted to benefit Campus Ministry outreach to those in need in our community.

SUMMARY:'Rot: The Irish Appetite and the Great Hunger'
DESCRIPTION:In the next installment in the Celtic Speaker Series\, Dr. Padraic X. Scanlan\, Associate Professor at the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources at the University of Toronto\, will present on the topic of ‘The Irish Appetite and the Great Hunger’ which he explores in his book\, Rot. \n\n\n\nOn the eve of the Great Famine (1845-1851)\, British commentators speculated about the apparently limitless\, even freakish appetites of the poorest Irish rural labourers for potatoes. Potatoes were more than a staple for the Irish poor; millions subsisted on potatoes\, and virtually nothing else. To many officials and political economists\, this total dependence on potatoes symbolised Ireland’s antiquity. The Irish\, by these lights\, were an atavism in the modern United Kingdom\, a people from another time who needed to be brought into the economic present\, through land reform\, labour discipline\, and the dynamic energy of English capital. In reality\, the potato made possible an endless squeeze on Irish labourers to produce crops for export\, mostly to England and Scotland. Rather than insulating Ireland from the risks of nineteenth-century global capitalism\, the potato economy left the very poorest workers in the United Kingdom exquisitely vulnerable to the perils of the market.

Kelly Library is proud to celebrate the recent donation of the Sisters of Service records to its Special Collections: Archives and Rare Books. This exhibition highlights the SOS as a uniquely Canadian\, untraditional women’s religious institute\, whose century of service spans immigration work\, education\, nursing\, social work\, and beyond. SUMMARY:Dante's Musical Journey in The Divine Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Friday\, October 24 for our Day of Dante! \n\n\n\nTHE DANTE GARDEN TOUR:2025 Dante celebrations will begin with an exclusive tour of The Dante Garden and The Dante Gardens\, an art installation reflecting the poet Dante Alighieri’s journey through Hell and Purgatory and finally to Heaven as depicted in poem The Divine Comedy. Created by sculptor Timothy Schmalz\, it consists of 100 panels\, reflecting his interpretation of the 100 cantos of the poem\, as well as a sculpture of Dante at work. Happening from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.\, the tour will be led by Stephen Tardif\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, in the Christianity & Culture Program\, and offered in collaboration with St. Mike’s Continuing Education Division. \n\n\n\nDANTE LECTURE:‘Dante’s Musical Journey in the Divine Comedy’ will be presented by Francesco Ciabattoni\, Professor of Italian Literature and Director of Global Medieval Studies at Georgetown University. The lecture will incorporate musical examples performed by members of St. Michael’s Schola Cantorum led by Professor Michael O’Connor\, W. J. Bennett Family Chair of Christianity and the Arts. The Chair is funded by alumnus John Bennett (SMC 6T7) in honour of his father. SUMMARY:History and Archaeology: how to work in an interdisciplinary manner with Dr. Thomas J. Finan
DESCRIPTION:Professor Finan’s focus of research is the history and archaeology of later medieval Ireland\, particularly the history of the borderlands region of the Shannon River in Roscommon in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Since 2002\, he has been thedirector of the Kilteasheen Archaeological Project\, one of the largest ongoing archaeological surveys and excavations in Ireland. Kilteasheen is a high status Gaelic ecclesiastical enclosure that includes a cemetery\, thirteenth century hall house\, and an elaborate medieval field system. He also conducts research a number of other fields\, including the historical theology of the later medieval Gaelic church\, thirteenth century bardic poetry\, the history of the O Conor and Mac Dermot families of Roscommon\, andlandscape history of north Roscommon.
