SUMMARY:Hope in Action Speaker Series: Being Human in the Age of Generative AI
DESCRIPTION:Rethinking creativity\, work\, and agency in the age of generative artificial intelligence \n\n\n\nWe are living through a moment where tools like ChatGPT\, Midjourney\, and GitHub Copilot are no longer futuristic curiosities\, they are genuine collaborators in our writing\, coding\, designing\, and decision-making. This talk steps back from the hype to ask a more human question: what happens to creativity\, work\, and personal agency when machines can generate ideas\, images\, and solutions at scale? \n\n\n\nTechnology and privacy lawyer Maleeha Akhtar will explore how these systems blur lines we once took for granted between author and tool\, employee and employer\, automation and autonomy. We’ll consider what it means to create in an age of algorithmic assistance\, how power shifts when data becomes raw material for intelligence\, and how law can protect not just innovation\, but dignity\, fairness\, and meaningful human choice. \n\n\n\nUltimately\, this session is about ensuring that as AI grows more capable\, we remain intentional about the kind of society\, and the kind of human role within it\, we want to build.

SUMMARY:Slavery and Scotland:  The Case of the Highland Estate of Glenaladale
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED \n\n\n\nStarting in 1772\, large groups of Catholics from the Scottish Highlands began moving across the Atlantic to Prince Edward Island\, Nova Scotia\, and Cape Breton Island. But where did they get the money to make this move? In this talk\, Dr. Karly Kehoe will highlight the complex links between the Highlands of Scotland\, Caribbean enslavement\, and settler colonialism in this contested colonial space. \n\n\n\nKarly Kehoe is Professor of History at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. Her work focuses on Scottish and Irish migration\, colonial privilege and settler colonialism in the British Atlantic world. She is the co-editor of the Histories of the Scottish Atlantic book series with Edinburgh University Press\, chairperson of the Gorsebrook Research Institute for Atlantic Canada Studies\, and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Her most recent book\, Empire and Emancipation: Scottish and Irish Catholics at the Atlantic Fringe\, was published by the University of Toronto Press in 2022. \n\n\n\nRSVP: Slavery and Scotland:  The Case of the Highland Estate of Glenaladale | Dr. Karly Kehoe – Fill out form

SUMMARY:The Metaphysical Roots of Media Studies: McLuhan\, Maritain\, and Gilson
DESCRIPTION:Marshall McLuhan\, Jacques Maritain\, and Étienne Gilson stand as the intellectual pillars of St. Michael’s College\, defining its global reputation in the 20th century. TV author\, playwright\, and theatre scholar Felice Cappa will be presenting his forthcoming book\, McLuhan in Dialogue with Maritain and Gilson: The Metaphysical Roots of Media Studies (Springer 2026)\, a unique monography of McLuhan’s relationship with Maritain and Gilson on philosophical and theological education. \n\n\n\nMcLuhan’s relationship with the Neo-Thomist philosophers Maritain and Gilson\, which lasted four decades\, from the time of his doctorate in Cambridge\, in the 1930s\, until the end of their lives\, in the 1970s\, is chosen as a field of investigation to explore the paths that allowed McLuhan to start from the classical culture of the Trivium and arrive at the discovery of new disciplinary territories\, from cultural studies to media studies\, of which he is considered the founder. Registration required.

SUMMARY:Songs of Penance and Renewal: Liturgical Chant in Dante’s Purgatorio

Through a unique blending of sound\, song\, word\, and image\, this performative presentation will offer a devotional\, meditative encounter with the musical landscape of Purgatorio\, just in time for Holy Week.
