Dante’s Musical Journey in The Divine Comedy
October 24 All day
Please join us on Friday, October 24 for our Day of Dante!
THE DANTE GARDEN TOUR:
2025 Dante celebrations will begin with an exclusive tour of The Dante Garden and The Dante Gardens, an art installation reflecting the poet Dante Alighieri’s journey through Hell and Purgatory and finally to Heaven as depicted in poem The Divine Comedy. Created by sculptor Timothy Schmalz, it consists of 100 panels, reflecting his interpretation of the 100 cantos of the poem, as well as a sculpture of Dante at work. Happening from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m., the tour will be led by Stephen Tardif, Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, in the Christianity & Culture Program, and offered in collaboration with St. Mike’s Continuing Education Division.
DANTE LECTURE:
‘Dante’s Musical Journey in the Divine Comedy’ will be presented by Francesco Ciabattoni, Professor of Italian Literature and Director of Global Medieval Studies at Georgetown University. The lecture will incorporate musical examples performed by members of St. Michael’s Schola Cantorum led by Professor Michael O’Connor, W. J. Bennett Family Chair of Christianity and the Arts. The Chair is funded by alumnus John Bennett (SMC 6T7) in honour of his father. The annual Dante lecture, established by Alberto Di Giovanni and Caroline Morgan Di Giovanni, will take place from 6 – 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall 400.
RECEPTION FEATURING NEW ADDITIONS TO THE DANTE COLLECTION:
Following the lecture, please join us for a reception in Father Madden Hall from 7:30 – 9 p.m. featuring a display of new additions to The Dante Collection housed in the John M. Kelly Library. The Dante Collection was established in the Kelly Library in 2013 based on a gift of books and works of art by Alberto Di Giovanni and Caroline Morgan Di Giovanni.
“St. Michael’s has long been known for its appreciation of Dante as a major part of Christian imagination. We host an annual Dante Lecture, house a substantial Dante Collection in the Kelly Library and The Dante Garden offers a unique way for students and the broader community to engage with the genius of Dante,” says St. Michael’s President David Sylvester.”
