A trailblazer in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Dr. Mimi Marrocco has played a pivotal role in shaping both education and practice in the field. As the founding Director of Continuing Education at St. Mike’s, she was instrumental in developing programs that have influenced students and organizations locally and internationally. Her leadership spans academia and the corporate world, where mentorship and advocacy for responsible business practices continue to inspire.
Mimi’s journey in CSR began when the field was still emerging. “We realized that community investment needed more clarity,” she recalls, reflecting on the early days. Her work focused on creating a stronger sense of direction and aligning purpose with people and vision. Today, she envisions a future where businesses no longer require separate CSR departments. “Sustainability should be part of a company’s DNA,” she emphasizes, underscoring the need for responsible practices to be woven into every organization’s fabric.
While proud of the programs she helped create, it’s the personal connections that stand out as Mimi’s greatest achievement. “When someone tells me a conversation made a difference, that’s what makes me happiest,” she says. A dedicated mentor, she has guided many students who have gone on to become leaders in CSR, sustainability, and ethical business.
For those entering the field or transitioning careers, Mimi’s advice is simple yet powerful: “Find what moves you. Align your purpose with an organization that shares your vision.” She believes true success comes when work feeds the soul, not just the bank account. “If you can make a living doing what you love, that’s where the real impact lies.”
A legacy of growth and continuing influence

As she transitions from active leadership, reflection on the evolution of the CSR program she helped launch brings immense pride. “Kathryn (Cooper) has taken it to new heights,” she says, acknowledging the program’s continued success under new leadership. This progress reflects a broader shift in the field—from traditional Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to a more holistic approach now known as Social Responsibility & Sustainability (SR&S). The SR&S framework integrates sustainability, ethics, and social impact directly into business and organizational strategies, moving beyond CSR as a separate function.
Today, the program continues to thrive as the Diploma in Social Responsibility and Sustainability at the University of St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto equips students with the knowledge and skills to drive meaningful change in business and society.
Her legacy is also cemented through the Dr. Mimi Marrocco Social Responsibility & Sustainability Bursary, which provides financial assistance to students in the SR&S program. Unlike a merit-based scholarship, the bursary is awarded based on financial need, ensuring that individuals passionate about sustainability and social responsibility can access this education regardless of financial barriers. This support enables students to focus on their studies and future impact, rather than financial constraints.

Donations can be made here. All contributions over $25 are eligible for a tax receipt. Every donation helps open doors for future leaders committed to building a more sustainable and socially responsible world.
Mimi’s contributions have fundamentally changed the landscape of CSR, sustainability, and business leadership. Her dedication to creating impactful programs, mentoring future leaders, and advocating for responsible business practices continues to inspire. Through the bursary, her legacy lives on, empowering students to pursue careers that drive both business success and meaningful societal change. Her work remains a beacon for those striving to make business a force for good.
Recently, Dr. Marrocco’s name was added to St. Michael’s Legacy Wall. Located in Brennan Hall, the wall honours a select group of people who have been groundbreakers at St. Michael’s. Learn more about the fall ceremony that saw Dr. Marrocco inducted.
