Jesuitas? Women in the Society of Jesus from the 16th Century to the Present

February 28 @ 1:00 pm 3:00 pm EST

The Toronto Jesuit History Research Group Presents: Jesuitas? Women in the Society of Jesus from the 16th Century to the Present

While most of the major religious orders have a female equivalent, the Jesuits don’t. The reason usually given is that women were not “available” for mission in the way envisioned by St. Ignatius of Loyola. Yet, he accepted vows from four women. This paper looks at what “lack of availability” may have meant in the culture of time and the influence of St. Ignatius as well as how different women’s orders have tried to demonstrate it. It also looks briefly at the current situation of women in society and whether or not they are now “available.”
