Prof. Anthony Trindle (Celtic Studies, St Michael’s College)

Windows to the Past, Warnings for the Future: Lessons to be learned from Irish Placenames and Native Terminology.

Ireland’s rich landscape of placenames and unique terminology has been steadily eroded by the advance of colonialism and the English language over the course of several centuries. We will explore the wealth of knowledge that can be obtained by reconnecting with the labels our ancestors placed upon elements of the world around us. Connecting with this heritage not only allows us to understand the pasts of our people and our landscape: it ensures that we are prepared to face the challenges of the future.
