Charbonnel Lounge, Elmsley Hall

Based on the award-winning monograph Shadow of a Taxman, this talk will discuss how the underground Irish revolutionary government’s funds were solicited, collected, transmitted and safeguarded, as well as who the financial backers were and what might have influenced their decision to contribute. In modern parlance, the Irish War of Independence was a crowdfunded revolution, with 440,000 ordinary men and women in Ireland and overseas, each contributing a small amount. By combining newly uncovered subscriber lists with census returns and other documents, Shadow of a Taxman provides the first demographic analysis of non-combatant supporters of Irish independence on the eve of its realization.
