A Tradition of Learning and Community
The Continuing Education Division and its courses and programs are grounded in the traditions and history of the University.
A Rich History…
Our tradition of providing continuing education opportunities to alumni, the Catholic community and Ontario’s professional communities stretches back to the early 1900s. In 1987, USMC formalized its commitment by establishing the Continuing Education Division.
…and a Renewed Vision
A formal review of Continuing Education in 2017 encouraged us to reflect upon our original vision, a vision closely aligned with St. Mike’s commitment to educating servants who lead and leaders who serve.
In 2023, Dr. Michael Salvatori, a career educator and author with extensive experience in university administration and teaching as well as at the secondary and primary school levels, was named the new Director of Continuing Education at the University of St. Michael’s College. As Director, Dr. Salvatori is leading the renewal and expansion of the University’s Continuing Education division.
Faith and Spirituality
Established in 1852 by the Basilian Fathers to serve the growing Catholic population in Toronto, the University is historically rooted in the educational mission shaped by the Basilians, the Sisters from the Congregations of St. Joseph and Loretto and other key community members.
The Continuing Education Division offers several courses and programs designed to contribute to course candidates’ personal and spiritual growth.
Academic Traditions and Thought Leaders
St. Michael’s is home to 5,000 students studying everything from astronomy and English to architecture and zoology. Our status as a federated college within the University of Toronto, one of the world’s top research universities, offers students a wealth of academic and extra-curricular choices. At the undergraduate level, St. Michael’s sponsors four programs, including Christianity and Culture, Book and Media Studies, Celtic Studies and Mediaeval Studies.
As we look toward our future, we also recall the past and the tremendous scholars who have worked and studied at St. Michael’s, including media theorist Marshall McLuhan and 20th-century French philosophers Etienne Gilson and Jacques Maritain.
One Community
St. Michael’s campus in downtown Toronto draws many visitors to its elegant quad and famous rock gardens green campus. It is home to St. Basil’s Church and the adjacent Odette Hall, the oldest buildings at the University of Toronto. Among the many resources offered to the community is the Kelly Library, one of the busiest libraries in the U of T Libraries system. It is also home to the Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute as well as the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies.
