The renewal of Brennan Hall is far more than a renovation project.
It is a reaffirmation of the role, impact and identity of the University of St. Michael's College.
The renovations in Brennan Hall are proceeding on schedule. The Registrar’s Office recently moved into its bright new location, and a variety of open, multi-functional student spaces are taking shape. In a few short months, the “Heart of St. Mike’s” will be fully revitalized for our 5,200 students.
Want to catch up on this historic St. Michael's project? More information can be found at the bottom of this page.
In close consultation with staff, faculty and—most importantly—students, this landmark renovation project has already provided a new home for the USMC Registrar’s Office, which is set to become an open, state-of-the-art student services hub. It will also offer bright multi-use spaces for both quiet study and casual conversation, as well as flexible offices for student groups and clubs, all while preserving Brennan Hall’s historic facade.

Four founding gifts made the Brennan Hall Revitalization project a reality. Here's what inspired the "Brennan Hall Champions" to give:
Delighted with the success to date of the project.
“Diana and I are pleased to provide an anchor gift for this very important revitalization project at the heart of St. Michael’s. We are delighted with the success to date of follow-up fundraising from like-minded alumni and friends, and with the progress of the project itself. We look forward to a successful completion by year-end."

Grateful for the home St. Michael’s provided.
In 1956, when Tony J. Desanti arrived at the University of Toronto, he unexpectedly discovered that he did not have a space in student residence. St. Michael’s College found him a room. Tony remained grateful throughout his life for the warm welcome and the home and friends he found here. In naming the Tony J. Desanti Lobby in his memory, we gratefully acknowledge the dedication of Mary Ponikvar-Desanti, Tony’s wife, in fulfilling his wishes and honouring his enduring gratitude to St. Michael’s.
Honouring our family’s strong connection to Brennan Hall.
“Though we are not related to Fr. Laurence Brennan, for whom Brennan Hall is named, we feel a strong family connection to this project as our late father, J.F. (Frank) Brennan, an SMC/U of T alumnus, and partner in Brennan & Whale Architects designed the northern addition to Brennan Hall back in the 1960s. Our gift to the revitalization is made in memory of our parents and grandparents, and in honour of our father’s contributions to the designs of Brennan Hall, Loretto College, Elmsley Hall, Carr Hall, St. Basil’s Seminary and many other noteworthy buildings in Toronto.”

Inspired by St. Michael's students.
“The renovations to Brennan Hall represent both continuity and change—two vital pillars that have enabled St. Mike’s to grow and evolve over the years. Funding is essential to make the Brennan Hall renewal happen, and to maintain and build on our traditions. The quality students from all over the world who I see filling the Kelly Café, often beyond capacity, inspired me to give and to support their, and St. Mike’s, exciting future.”
Ann Marie Sweeney, 5T8
The classes of 6T8 and 5T8 have also played a huge role in launching this campaign.
The class of 6T8, dubbed “the class with brass” by Fr. Robert Madden, decided last fall to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their graduation by raising $68,000 to support the Brennan Hall project. They gathered in great numbers to celebrate at alumni reunion in June, and by the end of that weekend, they had raised $128,000—almost double their original goal. Soon after that, an anonymous donor and other gifts from the class lifted the total even higher—to $228,425!
This spring, the class of 5T8 also chose to support the Brennan Project, to mark both their 60th anniversary milestone and the enduring friendships they developed at St. Mike’s. Their class gift, totalling an amazing $123,000, was also celebrated at alumni reunion.
We thank all Brennan Hall donors to date, and invite you to see their names here.
