Course description: This course explores historical and contemporary functions of media narratives and technologies in the construction of cultural myths of romance that permeate mainstream societies. Myths of romantic love will be deconstructed through feminist, queer, disability and postcolonial theories of gender, sexuality, race and body image at the intersections of film, music, literature, tv and social media to expose marginalizing and disempowering tropes at the centre of dominant constructions and representations of romantic love.

In accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 4 Collective Agreement, Article 15.07, preference in hiring will be given to graduate students whose disciplinary study and research specializations align closely with the focus of this course. Salary: $46.23 per hour + 4% vacation pay Estimated course enrolment: 60 students Size of appointment: 30 hours Class schedule: Wednesday: 2-4. Dates of appointment: January 1, 2024 – May 10, 2024.
