Course description: This course explores late-mediaeval mysticism through the ‘Middle English mystics’ – Richard Rolle, Julian of Norwich, Walter Hilton, Margery Kempe, and the Cloud-author. As well as examining the language and structure of key texts, our analysis will situate them within broader historical, cultural, spiritual, and literary contexts, and wider discussions of mystical traditions across time and place.
