In 2011 Mr. Bertin established the Investment Committee, now one of the standing committees of the Collegium, St. Michael’s governing board. With leadership, wise counsel and nearly 50 years of capital markets experience, Mr. Bertin ensured that the Committee, would use a disciplined approach to professionally manage St. Michael’s investments, including the General Endowment Fund, Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund, and the Retirement Plan.

As Chair of the Committee he introduced detailed Statements of Investment Policy and Procedures, selected an investment consultant, and carefully chose portfolio managers offering high quality investment funds. This translated into a best-of-class approach to the management of the University’s funds that continues today. By spearheading this critical change in investment approach, he has helped ensure that the returns generated by these funds remain an important contributor to the annual operational funding requirements of USMC.

Mr. Bertin retired from the Committee in 2019. In 2014 he received the University of Toronto’s Arbor Award, which is granted in recognition of exceptional volunteer service to the University community.

Honorary Fellowships are awarded to individuals whose ongoing work and success aligns with the Mission, Vision, and values of USMC. An honorary fellowship draws the candidate into the St. Michael’s community for mutual enrichment, inspiration, and encouragement.

This year’s convocation takes place on November 11 at 2 p.m. in St. Basil’s Church.
