Our Faith Community

Our Faith Community

At the University of St. Michael’s College, faith, religion, and spirituality are valued and engaged not only in the classroom, but across many aspects of the life of St. Michael’s community. Embracing these human realities and reflecting on their meaning is at the core of the Catholic Intellectual tradition, of which St. Michael’s is a part. St. Michael’s comprehensive Campus Ministry plays a pivotal role in helping students, faculty, and staff to integrate faith, religion, and spirituality into their lives and the life of the community.

USMC Campus Ministry

Campus Ministry at St. Michael’s supports the students, staff, and faculty in their individual and collective spiritual growth and well-being. While offering some distinctively Catholic programming, Campus Ministry at St. Mike’s welcomes people from all religious traditions, and provides multi-faith opportunities for spiritual growth through prayer, community service, and intellectual pursuits.

Since it is central to the Mission of St. Michael’s as a Catholic University, the renewal of the Campus Ministry program is pivotal to the St. Mike’s 180 strategic plan.

For other spiritual resources and opportunities, please see below.

  • St. Basil’s Parish

As our collegiate church, St. Basil’s serves as a place of encounter with God and other people for both the USMC and parish community. Through St. Basil’s and the care of the Basilian fathers, students receive the Sacraments and are given opportunities to participate in a variety of community service projects.

  • St. Michael’s Faculty of Theology

The graduate division of the University of St. Michael’s College, a Roman Catholic university established by the Congregation of St. Basil and federated with the University of Toronto, offers both basic and advanced graduate degrees. Accredited by the Association of Theological Schools, the Faculty of Theology is committed to a theological enterprise that is interdisciplinary, ecumenical and attuned to multi-faith and multicultural contexts.

  • Newman Centre Catholic Chaplaincy and Parish

Founded in 1922 by the Newman Club, the Newman Centre serves Catholic students on the University of Toronto campus with a variety of meetings and social events. USMC Campus Ministry and the Newman Centre frequently collaborate with one another to organize retreats, the faith and reason lecture series, and opportunities to encounter Christ through Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

  • Archdiocese of Toronto

As a Catholic university, USMC is an important part of the Archdiocese of Toronto. The Archdiocese takes an active interest in the university and works to support its student life community, including Campus Ministry. Through USMC Campus Ministry, students participate in Archdiocesan events such as Lectio Divina, retreats, conferences and community outreach programs.

  • Office of Catholic Youth (OCY)

The Office of Catholic Youth is focused on cultivating relationships with and providing support to those who minister to young people in the parish communities within the Archdiocese of Toronto. USMC Campus Ministry looks to the OCY as a support base for forming the USMC student community into Christian leaders who come to know Christ, deepen their relationship with Him, and are transformed into intentional disciples.
