The Pat and Mary Brown Award for First Nations Students

Pat and Mary Brown met at St Michael’s College, graduated together, and were dedicated Alumni. They each received an Arbor Award for their volunteer service to the College, and Mary was inducted as an honorary fellow of the University of St. Michael’s College.  Pat’s family on his maternal side was Sto:lo whose traditional territory is in the Fraser River Valley in British Columbia. Pat attended St. Mike’s on a scholarship. This award has been established to assist other First Nations students to attend St. Michael’s College which was such a significant part of the lives of Pat and Mary Brown.  This award was made possible by the children of Pat and Mary Brown, Catherine, John, Mark, Greg, and Chris Brown.

Two (2) awards of equal value will be distributed to two (2) students annually.  Awarded to either USMC undergraduate and/or USMC Faculty of Theology graduate program students enrolled at the University of St. Michael’s College.  Applicants must demonstrate First Nations ancestry– Status or Non-Status*.

Value: $2400-$5000

*Materials submitted by a candidate who self-identifies as First Nations must include one or more of the following in order of preference:

(a) A copy of a secure Certificate of Indian Status under the Indian Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. I-5).
(b) A copy of a letter from the Government of Canada confirming registration under the Indian Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. I-5).
(c) Registration # under the Indian Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. I-5).
(d) Copy of a band membership card from a recognized First Nation.
(e) A letter of support or recommendation from a recognized First Nation’s government or a local First Nation’s band council confirming band membership; and/or
(f) Information from the applicant explaining their First Nation background – e.g., when they began to identify as First Nations, which community they claim a connection to, whether they have been acknowledged or accepted by the First Nation that they claim a connection to – and the reasons for the lack of supporting documentation, if such is the case.

Additional Criteria (to be weighed equally):

  • Genuine involvement in the student’s own First Nation’s community and/or First Nations communities
  • Well-rounded individual(s) with diverse interests, work experience and extra-curricular involvement
  • Good academic standing (i.e., B average or CGPA of 3.0 or higher)
  • A letter explaining student’s financial need (OSAP and Financial Statements are not a requirement)
  • Funds should be used for tuition, accommodations, books, and other required academic materials and/or travel to and from the University of St. Michael’s College.
